Computed Tomography

Computed tomography (CT) is an advanced imaging technology that provides detailed information and insight into a pet’s soft tissue structures. Unlike traditional X-rays, which produce a single top-to-bottom image, CT generates numerous thinly sliced images that allow the veterinarian to view a specific point of interest (e.g., an organ, tumor, or joint) at various depths, or to use the images to construct a three-dimensional computer generated model. This level of visual study and precision provides your pet’s care team with key information, including the abnormality’s exact location, size, and proximity to or involvement with other structures.

CT is a relatively new addition to veterinary medicine, and was previously available only at large referral hospitals and universities. NVC is proud to bring this advanced imaging modality to our patients and clients, thus creating better access to cutting-edge diagnostic technology and improving patient outcomes.

On-Site CT Machine FAQs

Although the scanning process takes little time, achieving a diagnostic CT scan (i.e., a clear, readable image) requires specific—sometimes unnatural or uncomfortable—patient positioning and complete stillness, so general anesthesia is required.

While we understand that the thought of anesthesia can be troubling, rest assured that we take every precaution, and practice only the safest anesthetic protocols. Pets are supervised at all times, and receive continuous hands-on assessment and, during the actual scanning process, are monitored using state-of-the-art electronic equipment. From start to finish, a CT procedure takes less than one hour, after which your pet recovers without anxiety, pain, or memory of what took place.

CT is a versatile imaging tool that is invaluable for studying soft tissues, as well as bones and joints. CT is often recommended for conditions such as:

  • Oral or dental problems
  • Nasal abnormalities
  • Lung studies (e.g., to detect airway problems, cancer, pneumonia, foreign body, inflammation, lung collapse, or consolidation) Surgical mapping
  • Angiography (i.e., injectable contrast dye)
  • Orthopedic surgery planning
  • Cancer staging (i.e., metastatic screening)

We have the availability to submit our CT Scans to a board-certified veterinary radiologist for review to ensure the most accurate and precise diagnosis for your beloved pet.
