Orthopedic surgery includes any procedure performed on the bones or joints. Veterinarians who perform orthopedic surgery must have strong surgical skills, and a vast understanding of biomechanical forces and how muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and bones interact to create body motion, absorb shock, and disperse energy.

A happy dog and a curious cat, freshly seen by the vet, stand together in a field of yellow flowers. The sun sets in the background, casting a warm glow over the scene. Both animals look content and relaxed after their veterinarian visit.

Orthopedic conditions that benefit from surgery

Pets suffer from a wide range of orthopedic-related injuries that can be congenital, environmental, or traumatic. Most conditions can be corrected with surgery to improve the pet’s mobility, reduce pain, and improve quality of life. These include:

  • Luxating patella
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Cranial cruciate ligament rupture
  • Bone fracture
  • Limb amputation

Orthopedic surgeries often involve altering joint mechanics by reshaping bone or implanting sterile hardware, including pins, plates, screws, bands, and wire, that creates stability without impairing motion.

Our orthopedic approach

Successful orthopedic surgeries result in proper tissue healing, and the pet’s return to pain-free functional movement. To ensure this outcome, Neighborhood Veterinary Centers have considered every detail of your pet’s bone or joint surgery long before they reach the operating table. Some of these details include:

A white outline of a hand with a plus symbol above it on a red circular background. Small sparkles surround the plus symbol, suggesting health, care, or veterinary assistance.

Skilled orthopedic exam

Our veterinarians have honed their palpation and assessment techniques to accurately identify pain, weakness, and joint abnormality.

Advanced imaging and planning

Most procedures involve pre-surgical imaging to evaluate and measure the joint and to pre-plan the surgical approach and each cut.

A white outline of a large heart with an EKG line inside and a smaller heart with a checkmark graces the red circular background, symbolizing the care and precision that define every veterinarian's dedication.

State-of-the-art surgical suite and instrumentation

Our dedicated surgery suite ensures a sterile space for your pet’s surgery and minimizes post-operative infection risks. Our top-of-the-line instruments and hardware reduce unnecessary tissue trauma and ensure a stable repair.

A red circular icon displays a white outline of a paw print, perfect for any veterinarian. Inside the paw print, a heart shape forms the central pad, symbolizing compassionate veterinary care.

Pain management

Pain can prolong surgery times, delay healing, and contribute to post-surgical depression and immune system deficiency. We aggressively treat pain before, during, and after surgery with constant rate infusions, and intravenous analgesia.

Two outlined hands creating an open circle around a heart shape, all in white, set against a red circular background—a symbol of care and compassion akin to a veterinarian’s gentle touch.

Post-operative care and rehabilitation

After we place the last suture, your pet’s recovery begins. We use numerous rehabilitation modalities during the immediate post-operative period, including ice to reduce swelling and inflammation, laser therapy, and passive range of motion.

In the center of a red circle, a white outline of a dog bone symbolizes care and compassion, reminiscent of the attention your pet receives at the veterinarian.

Physical rehabilitation

Veterinary rehabilitation can reduce pain, prevent post-operative muscle loss, and accelerate a pet’s return to function. We provide safe exercise recommendations for each recovery stage, and often recommend our in-house laser and water treadmill therapy.
